Ray LaMontagne

In relation to the actual texts for Pentecost 3A, is the video Trouble by Ray LaMontagne. The song, corrupted by the insurance company commercial, is a wonderful ballad sung soulfully by a man who grew up knowing trouble. LaMontagne’s father was a violent man addition to being a musician) who abandoned the family when Ray was a young boy. The video  begins with a humorous scene of office stress and ends with Jesus’ evocative summons for those who are weary and carrying heavy burdens to come to him for rest.

This Land is Your Land

Woody Guthrie

This Land is Your Land is one of our nation’s most prolific folk songs and it has a history too. Written by folk legend Woody Guthrie in 1940, the song was a response to Irving Berlin’s God Bless America. Guthrie thought Berlin’s song sappy and “complacent” and said he was tired of hearing Kate Smith sing it. This Land is Your Land was originally titled “God Blessed America For Me” and included more edgy political verses not included when Guthrie first recorded it in 1944.

The video features Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s live performance and reflects on who’s land this land was before all the boats landed on its eastern shores. The piece will also provide a good counter balance to all of the patriotic hoopla of the 4th of July. At the end of the video is a memorium to Clarence Clemons, THE BIG MAN, the E Street Band’s saxophonist extraordinaire, who died last week at age 69.

To purchase this video for use in worship please visit If you just want watch it for the heck of it, that’s okay. 10 percent of all the proceeds goes into a fund to help struggling pastors in struggling churches pay their bills. Right now the fund stands at $25. Not exactly big business, I know.
